Drone Consultant vs. Drone Service Provider: Which Path Fits Your Business?
Dec 05, 2024Do you know the difference between a drone consultant and a drone service provider (DSP)? These two roles may sound similar, but they serve entirely different purposes in the drone industry.
Drone Service Providers (DSPs):
- Perform routine tasks like photography, mapping, or inspections.
- Focus on drone flights and data collection in the field.
- Take on shorter-term projects, often competing on price.
Drone Consultants:
- Get paid to advise on integrating drones, improving efficiency, and cutting costs.
- Create custom drone programs, conduct training, and develop operations manuals.
- Focus on strategy and long-term solutions, often without flying drones themselves.
What’s the Difference?
While DSPs are hands-on operators specializing in short-term projects, consultants focus on providing strategic advice and creating scalable programs that help businesses maximize drone technology. In many cases, consultants don’t even fly drones—they’re busy solving problems and helping businesses grow.
Back in September, I had the opportunity to sit down with Daniel Fuller of Clarify Consulting LLC, a fellow drone consultant, at the Commercial UAV News Expo in Las Vegas—one of the largest shows in the industry.
We discussed:

Instead of just telling you about it, we recorded the conversation to share all the insights with you.
